Its fish fauna includes the strictly protected European mud minnow, the protected weatherfish, and the amphibian fauna is outstandingly abundant and rich in species. The greatest value of Kapszeg Lake is its rich birdlife. It is home to the most populous and extremely species-rich heron colony of Tolna County, with rare and strictly protected wading birds such as the squacco heron, the little egret, the great white egret, the grey heron, the night heron and the purple heron. Outside the colony breeds the strictly protected ferruginous duck and the spoonbill, while during migration time lesser spotted eagles and white-tailed eagles feed here regularly. The most valuable protected plants are the water violet, the common twayblade, the Kievan nettle, the summer snowflake and the early marsh orchid.
Declared to be protected: 28/2006. (V. 22.) KvVM decree.
Size of the protected area: 156 ha
