Old Drava Visitor Centre
Educating about the natural values and traditions of the Ormánság region, the Old Drava Visitor Centre awaits visitors with an interactive exhibition, indigenous farm animal display, study trails, a variety of active programmes and environmental education sessions.
The visitor centre is open to the public all year round. Its aim is to present the natural values and traditions of the Ormanság and the East-Drava Region in a complex, experience-oriented way.
The main building of the visitor centre houses an exhibition about the natural and cultural values and traditions of the region, equipped richly with interactive components. Besides telling about the natural environment, the facility also has an important role in presenting about the ethnography of the Ormánság region.
The interactive classroom, equipped with modern educational technology including a smart board, projector, 5.1 sound system, visual aids and telescopes, is a venue for interesting environmental education programmes, nature presentations, conferences, workshops and seminars.
The Traditional Farming study trail, illustrating the farming practices of the area, includes an orchard of old fruit varieties, and a garden of herbs and spices. At the end of the study trail, visitors to the farmyard with its exhibits of old Hungarian domestic animal breeds not only can see the animals but also learn about the role animals used to play in everyday farming in the past.
The Old Drava Study Trail shows us how it is possible to bring the life of local communities into harmony with the Ormánság landscape, in a complex way, relying on the still feasible elements of former floodplain farming.
The Wildlife of the Drava Study Trail gives visitors a glimpse of the diverse and unique wildlife of the area, from open water surfaces to marshes along the river and wooded grasslands covered with colourful wildflowers. The area is presented in an experiential way, assisted by a birdwatching shade, a bird ringing station, a roofed outdoor activity area and several rest areas.
Among the diverse activities offered by the visitor centre, included are learning about the avifauna along river Drava, as well as hiking, and programmes for families and children. Schoolchildren are awaited with a variety of nature programmes and environmental education sessions. There is also possibility to take part in practical classes supplementing school hours, and to implement research programmes or study trips.
