Bükkhát Forest Reserve
The Bükkhát Forest Reserve is located in the Drava Lowland, within the forestry district and ethnographic landscape Ormánság, in the administrative areas of the villages Páprád, Vajszló, Baranyahídvég and Sámod.
The area is home to valuable populations of lowland oak-hornbeam and oak-ash-elm gallery forests where black storks and red kites nest. The aim of the network of forest reserves is to understand the complex functioning of our forests, mainly under natural conditions, and also under the effects of human interventions. In the case of the core area, the aim is to promote the natural forest dynamics and to observe how the forest transforms when management and other human interventions are discontinued. In the buffer zone, while maintaining the conservation functions, the main objective is experimental forest management: to develop, compare and demonstrate new forest management practices instead of large-scale clear-cutting.
