White Stork Museum
People living in the village Kölked, south of Mohács, have co-existed with storks for centuries. The village, situated on the border of the Danube floodplain, has always been a safe nesting and feeding area for white storks. This is where the White Stork Museum, unique in the country, is found.
The thematic exhibition which has been open since 2002 and is unique even at a European scale, focuses on a single species, the white stork (Ciconia ciconia). The only similar facility we know about is in Klopot, Poland, which we maintain good professional relationship with.
In the former school building you can learn about the feeding, nesting habits and migration of white storks. You can learn about all the members of the stork family, of which only two species live in Hungary. Ethnographic aspects and literature associations of storks are also mentioned. During the nesting season, this beautiful bird can be seen live on the surrounding electricity poles.
We provide guided tours around the museum, to enhance the experience.
The White Stork Museum regularly hosts a variety of children's and family programmes and gift-making handicraft activities, during which participants can create beautiful objects from natural materials with the assistance of skilled craftsmen.
