Csokonyavisonta Wooded Pasture Nature Reserve

The aim by protecting the area is to preserve wooded pastures, a typical landscape element in the Inner Somogy region, along with the associated plant and animal species, as well as to ensure the conditions for extensive, grazing type of grassland management wherever possible.

Field with tree

The Csokonyavisonta Wooded Pasture still preserves the centuries-old solitary trees and acidophilic plant associations typical for sandy grasslands. Besides the protected elements of flora and fauna, the landscape value of wooded pastures is also remarkable.

The altitude of the area varies between 120 and 140 m above sea level. Even within this small area, the variability of the landscape of Inner Somogy is noticeable, with sand hummocks and the depressions and flats in between them. Among the forest communities formed by the undulating surface there are still oak-hornbeam and Turkey-oak forests, alder groves and alder bogs surviving. The wooded pasture is the result of pastoral farming in recent centuries, when the areas were utilised mainly for raising cattle and pigs. As grazing grassland management was gradually discontinued, the proportion of open areas has steadily declined. The maintenance of the remaining grasslands is an important conservation management task for the future. The most important protected plant species of the wooded pasture include the variegated crocus (Crocus vittatus), the autumn lady's tresses spiranthes (Spiranthes spiralis) and the magnificent loose-flowered orchid (Orchis laxiflora ssp. elegans). Among the invertebrates, the large copper butterfly (Lycaena dispar) is worthy of mention. Among birds, the most important breeding species are the black stork (Ciconia nigra), the black kite (Milvus migrans), the white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), the European honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus), the black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius) and the middle spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos medius).
