Pacsmag Lakes Nature Reserve

The nature reserve, established in 1990, is located in the outskirts of Tamási, in the valley of the Koppány river. Mostly wetland habitats and, in a lesser proportion, forests and grasslands are found here.

Lake on a floodland

The protected area was established mainly because of the presence of an abundant breeding and migratory waterfowl fauna, which is of major importance in this area. The lake system is an important breeding area for herons and ducks; regular nesters include great white egrets, night herons, little bitterns, grey herons and purple herons. The Pacsmag Lakes are one of the most important habitats for the strictly protected ferruginous duck. Observations show that more than half of the bird species recorded in the country have already been observed here, and the area was added to the inventory of Wetlands of International Importance in 1997.
Declared to be protected: 7/1990. (IV.23.) KVM decree.
Size of the protected area: 487.3 ha
