Abaliget Cave
The Abaliget Cave is one of the best known and most popular natural sights of Mecsek Mountains. Its 466 m long main passage and three other hardly accessible side-passages have become discovered as a result of continuous explorations.
Invisibly to the human eye, caves continue to change day by day. This happens due to the effect of the stream flowing all along the cave passage. The cave serves as an important bat shelter: hundreds of lesser and greater horseshoe bats can be observed roosting in the winter period of the year.
The main passage of the cave can be comfortably walked through on foot in normal clothes. The side passages are not open to the public, and can be accessed by researchers only. Some cave formations are known by a number of names, including the ’Leaning Tower of Pisa’, the ’Florentine Fountain’, the ’Calvary’, the ’Elephant's Head’, the ’Ruins of Carthage’ and ’Niagara Falls’. The rocks and stalactites are often associated with legends and beliefs, which are told by the guide as the tour progresses. For example, the ’Suspended Stone’ high above our heads, is believed to move if an unfaithful hiker passes underneath it.
The cave has an average temperature of 12°C, its climate bringing relief to people suffering from respiratory, allergic and asthmatic diseases. The cave can be visited on guided tours which start every hour. The last tour departs one hour before closing time.
Please note that it is not possible to visit the Bat Museum after the last guided tour! Those arriving with a combined ticket for the last guided tour are kindly requested to visit the Bat Museum before the cave tour. The visit to the Bat Museum takes 25-30 minutes.
Important hints: The cave is not recommended for visitors under 6 years of age. For individual guests it is not possible to pre-book tickets or book online. Tickets can be booked at the cave ticket office for the following tour! Maximum number of participants: 80 per group. The cave is physically not accessible for visitors with a wheelchair. Thank you for your kind understanding!
