Bat Museum

Bats have captured people's imagination for thousands of years, but different cultures in various parts of the world have different attitudes towards them.

Interior of the Bat Museum

In the eastern world, bats have a positive role, often depicted in paintings and carvings as a mystical creature bringing good luck. In contrast, in Europe and in Christian culture, bats have always been the manifestation of bad and evil, thus it is not surprising that many superstitions and misconceptions have remained affecting people's attitude towards bats until the present day.
Bats live everywhere except in the arctic areas. Around 1000 species are known, 38 of which occur regularly in Europe. In Hungary, there are 28 species, all of which are protected, including 8 strictly protected species.

The Abaliget Bat Museum was established by Duna-Drava National Park Directorate in 2004. With the help of the Green Baranja INTERREG project, the museum building and the exhibition inside about the life history of bats were completely renovated in 2019. Visitors can take an adventurous walk - over rooftops, through yards and workshops - and find out sometimes astonishing facts about bats. Spectacular, interactive and thought-provoking installations show, among other things, the similarities between the body structure of bats and humans, the diet and habitats of flying mammals, and the characteristics of bat species occurring all around the world. How bats navigate is no less mysterious, and the museum has many “secrets” to tell about this.

We hope that studying the information displayed in the museum will help to overcome misconceptions and possible dislike towards bats.

The visit to the Bat Museum takes 25-30 minutes. Please note that it is not possible to visit the Bat Museum after the last guided cave tour. Those arriving with a combined ticket for the last guided tour are kindly requested to visit the Bat Museum before the cave tour.
